3 Martha Lucinda Porter

Porter family records indicate Lucinda Porter was born in Illinois in 1868, daughter of John Henry Porter and Amelia Scott.  She was the fourth of seven children.

Familysearch.org (and Ray Furgeson) reports that Martha Lucinda Porter was born November 08, 1870 in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois.

She married John Wesley Furgeson on May 15, 1884 in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois.  She died Sunday April 13, 1902 in Arkansas City, Cowley County, Kansas, and is buried at the Mercer Cemetery.

Welcome to the FAMILY porter history web site

In the June 1, 1880 Census in Victoria, Knox County, Illinois, records the following.  This is interesting in that it suggests that Amelia was reported to have been born in (Vermont) (parenthesis probably meant they were not sure where she was born).

Children of Martha Lucinda Porter and John Wesley Furgeson are reported by the Furgeson family in Familysearch.org :

Published Friday, April 18, 1902.

Mrs. Martha Furgeson died suddenly at her home in the south part of the city Sunday afternoon of heart trouble.  She was the mother of twelve children, ten of whom are living.  The two oldest are twins, 17 years old while the youngest is a babe of a few months.  The family are in destitute circumstances, and it would seem that the charitably inclined have an excellent opportunity to do good.  Rev Hyasine conducted the funeral services at the house Monday afternoon, and the remains were buried by the county.

Mrs. Martha L Furgeson, who lives on South Summit Street, died very suddenly Sunday afternoon.  She had been out in the garden with her husband and returning sat down for a minute or two and fell over dead.  She had been troubled with heart disease and the stoppage of the heart caused her death.  She was 34 years old and the mother of twelve children, the oldest of whom are twin boys aged 17.  The funeral services were held Monday afternoon by Rev Braniac with the interment at Mercer.

Mrs. M. L. Furgeson dropped dead at the family residence on south Summit street on Sunday, of heart disease.  She was only 34 years old and the mother of 12 children.

Below are death notices published in the local newspapers Friday, April 18, 1902.

Thanks to Jolene Furgeson Fischer of Ogden, Utah, for sharing this with us.

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much for answering my e-mail so quickly.  I am not Ruth Furgeson's daughter.  My Line is with Charles Ely Furgeson (great grandfather) oldest twin of Martha Lucinda, Ervin Charles Furgeson (grandfather) Charles Jerold Furgeson (father) now deceased. I have spent the last 6 years documenting the Furgeson Line.  I hate to say that some of the information of the John Wesley Furgeson family is incorrect, and it was submitted incorrect to familysearch.org.  I have original documents and will be glad to send them to you.  I am waiting for a couple of more things to update the information on Martha Lucinda Porter children and I have pictures of all her children that I will scan and send to you.  I am almost done updating all the family group sheets and will forward them to you soon.

I am sending John Henry Porter's Marriage license and certificates of Amelia and Anna Goff.  The Application of Marriage of John Henry and Anna is where the names of their parents are listed.  We found this about 4 years ago and were so excited.  My mother and father saw the family bible once and copied dates and names down.  The bible was in very poor condition and had been through a fire and recopied.  My mother said that Uncle Harold Furgeson was there with them and went they came to the name Freelove it also had the name Fredricka on the same line.  Uncle Harold put the to names together, my mother thought that Freelove was a first name and maybe Fredricka might have been a town that she was born.  I have only been working on the Porter line recently, my father and mother were very involved in researching the Porter line and we have documented everything that I will send you.  We do have a few extra names that were listed with John Henry Porter family that don't make sense.  I'm hoping that after your family reunion that I can have you look over the information of the family bible and see that you think of these extra names we have.

I would like to have more information of the Porter Family Reunion, I am interested to know if it's a yearly event.  We would like to try to come to the next one.

I am also enclosing the death notices in the local papers of Martha Lucinda's Death.  And a copy of the 1870 Census showing the family of John Henry and Amelia.  It has some of the children listed by either their middle or first given names.

I hope that you find these documents I'm sending you helpful.  My mother and I have been poring over all the information that your website has, it's fantastic.  Thank you again for all your hard work.  Have a wonderful reunion weekend!

Best Wishes,
